FAQs About OUR Radon Mitigation System

What is radon and why is it dangerous?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It's colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it impossible to detect without testing. When radon seeps into your home and accumulates, prolonged exposure can damage lung tissue and significantly increase your risk of lung cancer. In North Carolina alone, approximately 450 people die each year from radon-induced lung cancer.
How does radon enter my home?
Radon typically enters homes through cracks in foundation floors and walls, gaps around service pipes, construction joints, and even through well water. The pressure difference between your home's interior and the surrounding soil creates a vacuum effect that draws radon gas inside. Homes with basements or those built on slabs are particularly susceptible, though any home can have elevated radon levels regardless of age or construction type.
What radon level requires mitigation?
The EPA recommends taking action to reduce radon levels at or above 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). However, no level of radon is considered completely safe, and the EPA suggests considering mitigation for levels between 2-4 pCi/L as well. The goal of mitigation is to reduce indoor radon to the lowest achievable level, ideally below 2 pCi/L.
Is radon a problem in North Carolina and Virginia?

Yes, radon is a significant concern throughout North Carolina and Virginia. Geographic factors including soil composition, underlying rock formations, and local geology contribute to elevated radon levels in many areas. Every home should be tested regardless of location, as radon levels can vary dramatically even between neighboring properties.

What is radon mitigation?

Radon mitigation is the process of reducing radon gas concentrations in your home to safe levels. The most common and effective method is Active Soil Depressurization (ASD), which involves installing a ventilation system that draws radon from beneath your home's foundation and vents it safely outdoors before it can enter your living spaces.

How does a radon mitigation system work?

A typical radon mitigation system consists of a PVC pipe inserted through the foundation slab or into a sump pit, connected to a specialized radon fan. This fan runs continuously, creating negative pressure beneath your home that draws radon gas up through the pipe and exhausts it above the roofline where it safely disperses into the outdoor air.
